Graphic design FAQs
When should I hire an agency for graphic design versus a freelancer?
If you are looking for a robust campaign that includes print and digital ads, copywriting that will grab people’s attention, and research into your target market, you’re probably going to want to work with an agency. Each of those items requires a specialized skill set (copywriter, designer, motion graphics designer, art director) that goes beyond the skills of one individual. At Ross Creative Works, we act like an extension of your team, bringing all those specialized skills under one roof, so your campaign feels seamless from concept to delivery.
What should I look for in logo design and brand development?
A visual strategy is just as important as a business strategy when it comes to brand development. We don’t start design until we understand the purpose behind what your company needs. For example does your logo need to look fantastic on a black and white copy? Do you need a suite of high contrast colors to achieve web accessibility standards? Does the branding on your packaging need to reflect a high end feel, or should it feel accessible? Our interview process around the technical specifications as well as the emotional appeal help us understand where you want to take your visual identity.
What are some of the technical issues to watch out for when hiring a graphic designer?
Make sure you get the right files that you need for the long term! For example, if you hire a graphic designer for logo design and they only give you a JPG file, your logo could end up printing fuzzy (we made a whole blog post about that). JPGs also aren’t the best files for using on t-shirts or other types of giveaways. You want to make sure your designer gives you more editable vector files such as EPS or PDFs so that they can be layered on top of pictures without the white box in the background. If you’re hiring a Naperville graphic designer or agency, make sure you get the right files for the long term!
Will I own my final design files?
Yes, and this is particularly important for logo design. We will give you black and white, color, EPS, JPG, and PDF versions of your logo files. If a designer is only giving you a JPG file of your logo, run away fast! You should be given a full suite of files. For other types of design, we are happy to give you the working files, but some of them are in specialized design programs that require a subscription to open (EG Adobe Illustrator).
Can you provide graphic design templates in Canva or Powerpoint?
Absolutely! We do it all the time. Although more complicated “print ready” work is typically designed in the Adobe Suite, we can create templates for you in Canva and Powerpoint so that you can edit them yourself. Just be aware that those programs don’t always work for design that will be used for commercial printers. If you aren’t sure what you need, get in touch and we can walk you through your options. We’ll help you choose the right tools for your goals, so you never feel stuck or dependent on a designer for simple updates.
What if I already have a logo but need the rest of my materials updated?
No problem — we do brand modernization all the time. We can update your materials to be consistent, refreshed, and ready for any platform without losing your brand’s original spirit.
